Author Linda Zern

Linda Zern is a native of Florida where she learned to be moonstruck.
She wrote her first children’s chapter book, The Pocket Fairies of Middleburg, in 2005. Writer’s Digest called “the perspective of these tiny beings [the pocket fairies] refreshing, enchanting, and intriguing.”
Florida Publisher’s Association was kind enough to award her little book the President’s Book Award for best children’s book of 2005.

Samuel was confused. “What’s there to be scared about?”
“Are you kidding? You know the road it’s taken us to get here. So after all the bumps, to finally be with you, to finally turn my heart over, to let my feelings be exposed is both exciting and terrifying,” Ruth explained.
It was true. Ruth and Samuel had found the most roundabout way of getting together. They had been friends for the longest time. Part of a tight knit group of friends that had grown up together in Lancaster. So Ruth and Samuel didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize their friendship. They’d seen two of their close friends date in the past. But when their relationship went south, the friendship was ruined as well. Ruth and Samuel didn’t want the same thing to happen to them.
So Ruth and Samuel dated other people. They did not have much luck finding love though. There were a lot of first dates, but very few second dates. After a while, Ruth and Samuel started to lose hope that they’d ever meet their match. That’s when after a lot of hemming and hawing about risking their friendship, Ruth and Samuel finally gave in to the feelings they had for each other.
Ruth and Samuel’s first date was the best either one had ever experienced. They were a great match. With so much in common. And they made a wonderful couple. It was hard to believe they’d been so afraid to get together. In the end, their friendship only added to the relationship they were building. And ever since then, Ruth and Samuel had been nearly inseparable. Now almost a year in, Ruth and Samuel couldn’t imagine being with anyone else. They made each other happier than they ever thought possible. But that didn’t mean Ruth was without her worries.
Samuel was always there with optimism abound though. “That’s how I know we’re meant for us each other. Because we know what else is out there. And none of it compares to being with you.”

“Start checking vehicles,” I said, racing across the street to a parking lot. “Maybe we’ll find something with keys.”
“Eve,” West said as we started yanking car doors open. “You know if that kid was infected that it’s too late for Avian. He’ll get infected.”
I shook my head, my jaw set hard. “No,” I said as I checked another car. No keys. “There’s a chance the boy wasn’t infected. And if it just barely happened, he won’t be able to spread the infection for a few hours.”
But even as I made my argument, I knew it wasn’t true. Those bodies had been dead for days, maybe even over a week. If the kid was infected, TorBane would be fully saturated into his system.”
“Got it!” West shouted. He held up a pair of keys as a floor mat came tumbling out of the truck. “Get in!”
I hopped into the passenger seat and slammed the door shut. I tossed our supplies in the back seat. “You don’t know how to drive,” I said, my voice breathy.
“Today seems like a good day to learn,” West said, shoving the key in the ignition.
The truck clicked and sputtered. It had been a sitting, rusting dinosaur for six years. We’d been stupid to think any of these vehicles might start.
“Come on!” West shouted, pounding the steering wheel. He slammed one of the pedals with his foot and suddenly it roared to life. “Yes!”
“That there puts it into drive, I think,” I said, pointing to the stick on the side of the driving column.
West yanked on it and the truck jerked backwards and slammed into the vehicle behind us.
“Okay,” West said, shifting the stick again. “R stands for reverse. So D for drive?”
“Let’s assume,” I said, my blood racing and pounding in my ears. “Let’s go!”
D was indeed for drive and we rocketed forward, clipping another vehicle as we swung wildly out of the parking lot and onto the street.
“That woman was touched,” I said, bracing myself as we swerved madly. “She had probably gone out to look for food or something when a Hunter must have found her. West, this means they’re starting to come back into the city.”
The speedometer crept up to eighty miles an hour as we peeled back onto the onramp. Just as we pulled onto the freeway, there was a figure ahead of us. There was no time to stop and the truck plowed right into it.
The mechanical body broke right in half, completely cybernetic by this time. The upper half of the body crashed into the windshield, shattering it.
We both screamed as the glass burst into tiny glittering pieces and an arm dangled between the two of us.
“Holy…” West bellowed as the truck swerved violently back and forth and we ran over the lower half of the body.
“Keep driving!” I shouted. I was about to reach for the shoulders of the body, when its hand suddenly flung out at me, and wrapped around my throat.
West swore loudly. “It’s still alive?!”
“Keep…” I gasped for air as West swerved in an attempt to put distance between himself and the Bane that was somehow still attacking. “Driving!”
Wrapping my hands around the wrist, I squeezed until the cybernetic bones crumpled and bent and the hand let go. Plowing the heel of my hand into what was left of where its nose should have been, its head whipped back with a sickening crunch. The thing was instantly still.
But still carrying active TorBane.
I coughed violently, unbuckling my seatbelt.
“You okay?” West asked, wild fear in his eyes as he attempted to drive straight. He leaned as far to the left as possible, attempting to put some space between him and the mangled Bane.
“Yeah,” I croaked. My throat was probably bruised. “Keep driving. I’ll take care of this.”
I half stood as well as I could in the cramped space. Placing my hands on its shoulders, I gave a good shove. The body slid forward two feet and to the right. But one of its arms slipped down the front of the hood and caught in the grill.
“Oh, come on,” West said, looking at the body in disbelief.
“Keep driving,” I repeated. I used my boot to knock out the rest of the glass hanging around the frame of the window. Crawling up onto the dash, I slowly worked my way out onto the hood of the truck.
As we drove over the bumpy freeway, the arm wedged its way tighter and tighter into the grill. Finally, I simply snapped the arm off at the elbow. The rest of the body crashed to the ground. I tried yanking the rest of the arm free, but it wouldn’t budge.
“Get back in here, Eve!” West shouted. “We can have it melted down later. Sit down before I kill you!”
An amused chuckle worked its way through my lips as I carefully climbed back up the hood and into the vehicle.
“Well, this turned into an exciting day,” West said, shaking his head.
“Yeah, I think the Bane are getting back into the city,” I said, pushing my windblown hair back off my forehead. “That store was supposed to be fifteen miles inside our perimeter. They’ll be getting back into the center of the city soon. I thought I’d cleared all of them out for five hundred miles after the beacon went off.”
“Just another day in the world of the Evolution,” West said. “Must have been a Sleeper that recently woke up. It could have been inactive when you called them all out to the desert.
“For once, could the element of time just be on our side?” I said, exasperated.
“What,” West said, smiling at me as he swerved around a particularly large crack in the road. “And make life simple and boring?”
I shook my head and laughed. “Seriously.”

Today I'm delighted to welcome M. M. John, author of The Death of Ink, to my blog. As you read his post, you'll probably guess what attracted me to his book.

Behind the Characters

M. M. John

I wanted to write a story about writing. I wanted to write a story about young love. I came up with the idea of the The Death of Ink after reading a writing prompt about someone stealing a story idea.
The Characters:
Originally, I based the guy and the girl on two people I knew from high school. The girl was very smart, an A+ student who everyone hated for some reason. The boy was the more popular out of the two, arrogant, although thoughtful at times, and an enormous flirt. In history class I watched him flirt with the girl all the time, only to be constantly ignored. It didn’t even seem like she was aware of his infatuation. To my knowledge, they never dated although they were always amicable to each other. I thought it was an interesting dynamic. It got the wheels turning in my brain.
I started to get clearer ideas for each of my characters. I decided I would make each character symbolic of the writing process. Devon is more to-the-book, follow-the-rules kind of guy when it comes to writing. Paige represents the passion and raw creativity behind writing. I wanted to show how all of these traits, though they could at times clash, must work in synergy in narrative fiction.
Devon Jayden Connors
Devon has an interesting story, which the reader will get to see a little of in the book. He’s a kid from Michigan who moved to Lake County, Florida on the heels of a personal tragedy. He is eighteen years old, good-looking and a wide receiver at Bass Towers high school. He’s got the world in his palms until Paige Langley unwittingly stumbles upon a binder housing his darkest secrets.
This binder called The Collection is not actually his work, but the doings of a dead girl who haunts him every night.
Words I would use to describe Devon it would be reserved, clever and unpredictable. I didn’t want to make him brooding (as in a personality type, he does brood at times) and I didn’t want to make him a jerk or a womanizer. I put him in a committed relationship with another athlete (Cristina, a track-and-field runner) and gave him a pretty much mellow personality.
I have been told many times that Devon is a very unique. I based Devon’s personality a lot on my older brother. Some of his experiences, as far as writing, and why he does it, reflect my own. Writing some of his past life was very difficult for me for this reason.
Paige Langley
Paige’s story is more straight to the point and uncomplicated. She’s fifteen years old when her school closes down and she transfers to Bass Towers. Noting her proficiency in math, she is recommended for an aptitude test, which she passes and is placed in senior classes. She accidentally picks up Devon’s binder after meeting him in a book store.
Some would say Paige seeks attention, which would be incorrect. She already has attention. She is fifteen and a high school senior, her father is known around the neighborhood as being a cokehead and a deadbeat, and people expect her to get knocked-up and drop-out just like her big sister.
Paige wants the right kind of attention. The kind of attention her favorite author, and best-selling novelist, Linda Davis has. This is why when Linda Davis opens a writing contest; Paige sees it as her only chance to prove herself. And when Devon's binder of perfectly written stories basically falls in her lap, it only seems logical to Paige to cheat.
Influential Characters:
Since she was five, because of various circumstances, Paige has lived with her grandmother. Her grandmother is very strict on the girl. Paige is not, and I did not want her to be, one of those types who hate her parents (in this case guardian). Nor does she ‘find herself’ or ‘realize the restrictions in her life’ after she meets Devon and decides to rebel. I feel like that theme, though widely celebrated, this is overdone. Good girl gone bad with the help of an edgy, of course, male and turns against her parents. For one, girls can come to self-actualization and autonomy without the help or affections of a male counterpart.
Paige actually respects her grandmother and becomes defensive whenever someone says her grandmother is too strict. There is also another, deeper, part of that perspective. Her grandmother took her in when her father abandoned her after she was born. This early abandonment made Paige feel inadequate. In some ways, Paige feels grateful to, and as though she owes, her grandmother and wants to be the perfect granddaughter in order to prove her worth. This is hardly a healthy disposition, and something I work on in her in later books.
The greatest influence in Devon’s life belongs to two characters. The first is his twin sister, Garland, or simply Lyn. After a she experiences a life-altering event, Devon begins to create stories, mainly to comfort and amuse her. Since their father is a minister they spent a significant part of their lives presenting themselves as ‘perfect’ to the public, though not necessarily to their high school friends.
The second person is Olivia, the girl who died in Michigan before his family left the state. She was in some ways his muse, and still is, as she haunts him and forces him to write. As she starts to get greater and greater control of his life, Devon finds out that this once controllable nightmare might have an ending that means serious consequences for him and his family.

Tell us something about your book?

Wolf Sirens is a romance series about cursed Demigods in a town called Shade. It’s paranormal with a lot of depth, angst and action which you either love or hate.

What inspires your hyperactive mind to dish out such feisty novels?

Thanks, I look for inspiration everywhere. The original idea came from an unmet childhood desire for strong female characters in literature and television that I Wanted as role models.

How did you come up with such a beautiful title?

Once again thank you. I played around with words, I love words. I wanted to be original but still be true to the story. I probably came up with it when I was more than halfway done writing the first book. It was a perfect word combo.

Tell us about the cover and how it came to be?

I was pretty cash strapped so I sourced the images myself. I knew someone who knew someone who could do what I wanted with them and another friend of mine chose the font and the rest is history!

What can you tell us about Lila Crain? How is she different from other characters?

Lila is often viewed as a spoilt and cold hearted character. I sympathize with her. Her Brother is a jerk and her parents just divorced, she is ignored and her father has run off with another woman. She’s had a hard time of it in the city and she has a lot of growing up to do. She grows a lot throughout the first book and this theme continues with varying degree throughout the series. Ultimately she is Artemis, and Artemis takes no prisoners.

What’s the reason for your obsession with wolves?

I don’t know really. Though I am a long standing dog lover. I have thought about it before and the canine species is just so like us in a lot of ways. They are good company. Affectionate, loyal and nearly always in a pleasant mood.

Would you like to try any other genre in future?

Yes definitely. I have thought about writing N/A and plain Y/A too. I have to write a short PN story for an anthology that I am organizing with other authors, due out late next year. Contact me if you are an interested Author!

Please tell us something about Dusk in Shade?

Be prepared as the pace picks up. Expect more wolves, hunters and action! There’s more tension, red herrings and super surprises than ever before!Everything builds to a huge mega climax. You should be on the edge of your seat. It’s the regular roller coaster but super charged as Lila faces a new enemy.

What connects your supernatural characters to real world?

The series progresses to become slightly more skewed to fantasy. However the first 4 books are very paranormal. Shade (the setting) is very real, all the characters are everyday people, it just so happens that a few are infected with wolf venom and fewer still are afflicted with Artemis’ curse. And I love the angst that that brings of covering up a supernatural lifestyle and hiding it from the real world.

When did you start your tryst with literature?

I have always been a writer at heart. Perhaps I didn’t always consciously know it. I always wrote poems and kept journals. I started to write WS1 when I was about 27. I think I was ready to open up a creative vein and brave enough to say here is my work. Because your first novel is really just your heart on a plate.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Pantser, all the way. Though I should admit that I do think about things either very consciously or unconsciously, heaps. As a result I seem very quiet but then I can shock you with a very well thought out idea.

Did your novel take you in any unexpected direction, something completely off what you had planned?

No. Like I said I don’t plan. I had a feeling and an idea, a lot of drive and inspiration. I reworked characters and went over paragraphs until I had it right, but my main motivation remained the same. Wolves, angst, romance and strong quirky dynamic characters. Hopefully I achieved that.

What do you consider the most important part of a good story?

The connection and the love between the characters. I like a lot of description and I love a lot of desire. That’s what keeps me connected and reading late into the night.

How much do the characters in your novel reflect you or people that you know in your real life?

Probably more than I would like to admit. I think you should write what you know. When people criticize my characters and plot, I do take it a little hard because of that but at the same time I know I can stand solid in the fact that they might not like it or think its plausible or right but I have had those moments and I know those characters, so no amount of doubt thrown my way can stop my belief in the fact that I wrote a good story.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I’m on the computer marketing or cooking dinner or walking the dog. I also work in retail and I am wrapping up my studies.

What other some books are you coming up with?

I have an interest in sci-fi, fairytales and New Adult. I think my heart is in Young Adult but I will be writing some more paranormal for my Writers Co-op Anthology novel. Vampires or aliens might be in the cards.

Any message you want to give to your readers?

If you read and like Wolf Sirens then please review it. Mainly so that others can see that the book is worth picking up and reading. Word of mouth is important to any novels success.
